The area, history and economy

The city of Inverness is only part of the picture; Greater Inverness includes Culloden and Westhill, while Inverness-Shire is the largest county in Scotland – albeit containing just 1.34% of the nation’s population.

Inverness sits at the mouth of the River Ness and at the edge of Moray Firth where Dolphins are often spotted, especially in the areas near Kessock Bridge and Fort George. The River Ness leads to Loch Ness , which is famed for its monster and is just a short drive away.

Steeped in history, nearby Culloden Moor was home to the 18th century Battle of Culloden which featured the final confrontation of the Jacobite Rising. Modern Inverness is somewhat different and, with a 17 per cent increase in population between 2001 and 2011, the city is regarded as one of the fastest growing in Europe. A mixture of high tech industry, tourism and heritage drives the economy.

Education and schools in Inverness

Families moving to the area may be interested by the many primary schools, secondary schools and colleges, making this an ideal place to set up home and start a family. There are too many nursery, primary and secondary schools in the area to list, however it’s clear to see that the educational needs of your young ones will be met.

Inverness College is part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, and there are plans for a new specialist campus at Beechwood Farm.

Transport links from Inverness

With transport options including rail, road and air, it’s easy to get about.

By air, Inverness Airport provides scheduled flights to London (Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton), Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Belfast City, Dublin, Amsterdam, Geneva and other parts of Scotland.

By rail, Scotrail provide easy transport from Inverness Railway Station to Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, and also surrounding towns such as  Aviemore, Perth, Nairn, and Elgin.

Buses and coaches run from Inverness Bus Station, both within the city and to surrounding areas.
